Let's celebrate it! EDHEC Sailing Cup 50th anniversary

COURSE CROISIERE EDHEC, FULL STEAM AHEAD

Half a century after its foundation, the EDHEC Sailing Cup (Course Croisière EDHEC), Europe’s largest student sports event, is due to make a port of call in Brest, France. From 21 to 28 April, over 3,000 participants, 12,000 visitors and 23 nationalities are set to congregate in Brest’s emblematic Moulin Blanc port.

10 DAYS OF SPORTING COMPETITION AND CAMARADERIE

Every year, some 230 crews mixing high-level sports athletes, sailing buffs and students from all backgrounds, compete in the event’s historic trophy, the Trophée Mer, whether in One-design class or IRC boats. The EDHEC Sailing Cup attracts students from the world’s top institutions, as witnessed by the recent participations of crews from UCLA and Cambridge University.

This year’s historic 50^th anniversary edition will see a 100% Course Croisière EDHEC crew, comprising Presidents of the 1^st, 10^th, 20^th, 30^th, 40^th and 50^th editions of the EDHEC Sailing Cuof the EDHEC Sailing Cup, all reunite for the first time. This crew will take part in the last leg of the race on Saturday 28 April. This boat is symbolic of the association’s rich history and the links forged between its various generations over the years.  

A SUSTAIBABLE EVENT

In addition to the sporting challenge, the EDHEC Sailing Cup follows an approach geared to reducing its environmental footprint, exerting a positive impact on the host city and raising participants’ awareness of the ecological cause. In the interest of sustainable development, the association has been developing the Green project over the last few years. The project involves the adoption of a carbon report and ecological charter for the event, along with attentive waste sorting and re-distribution of non-consumed food to social organisations, etc.

INNOVATIVE ACTIVITIES 

For the first time in its history, the EDHEC Sailing Cup is to feature a conference-debate. During the event, France former Environment Minister, Ségolène Royal, will be speaking about ecology, with a particular focus on “Ecology, Against Wind and Tide”. Organised in collaboration with L’Agora, EDHEC Business School’s student tribune, the conference provides a fine illustration of the time and effort invested by other EDHEC associations to ensure the EDHEC Sailing Cup’s success. Other contributing associations include the audio-visual association ETNA, the rugby sevens association ER7 (scrum competitions held in the event village), Ed'Express (hitchhiking race between Rennes and Brest), and Team Golf EDHEC (a precision-driving event).

AND MORE PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE!

Sensitive to the situation in the Crimea, the 50 student organisers are keen to form a joint Ukraine-Russia crew to take part in the regatta. Along with EDHEC’s Human’East association, they set up a crowdfunding platform in order to raise the funds needed to see the project through to fruition.
